BRINKE STEVENS - QUEEN OF THE SCREAM QUEENS
Page 2
Brinke Stevens is among the most well known, most popular and most successful of all the scream queens! We recently sat down with her for a Dark Gallery quickie interview!
Dark Gallery: How did you get involved w/ Nightfall and the Dark Romances movies?
Brinke Stevens: When I was a marine biologist at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Mark Shepard was introduced to me by a mutual friend. He needed a few "technical terms"& hard science facts to put into a screenplay he was working on…and so I became his technical advisor. Several years later, I moved to Los Angeles and became an actress. Soon after, Mark and his partner Pat Miller hired me as the lead villain in DARK ROMANCES.
DG: Tell about your character "Diana"?
BS: "Diana" shows up in all seven episodes of DARK ROMANCES. And when she does, bad things usually happen to people! She captures a demon and gains immortality in "The Black Veil", wrecks havoc through several stories, and finally gets her come-uppance in the last episode, "What Goes Around…"
DG: What most appealed to you about story and character?
BS: It’s such great fun to play a creature of pure evil! I’m the sole connecting factor in the series, so I had a chance to reprise "Diana" in many different guises and settings. I also loved the lavish visual scope and range of the stories: from bawdy, colorful, early-1900’s Paris to a B & W film noirish conclusion that’s so moody and atmospheric.
DG: How do you feel about its finally getting a widespread release?
BS: So much hard work and talent went into making DARK ROMANCES! Many different writers, directors, special effects artists, and actors pitched in months of their time (long hours and low pay) without complaint, because we all truly believed in its weird vision. I’m so glad all their efforts will finally be seen by a wider audience. Indeed, it’s sort of a "boutique" production… but therein lies its many charms!
DG: Tell us about your character in EYES ARE UPON YOU?
BS: Oddly enough, I again played a demon-in-disguise in that film: Amanda, the new rich girl in town. I killed a fair amount of people (most of whom desperately deserved it) – I even ripped one guy’s heart out. Oooo yeah, lots of fun!
DG: Did you enjoy working with Tom Savini in EYES?
BS: I’d met Tom years earlier at a Fangoria convention; I caught his talk on stage, and he stuck around for mine. It became sort of a "mutual admiration society" after that…he’s such an amazing guy. He invited me down to the set of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, just to hang out – that’s how cool he is. Tom and I never actually worked together on EYES – his scenes were shot before mine. But he’s trying to go into production with VAMPIRATES, where I’d play a vampire bride to his Blackbeard pirate.
DG: Tell us about your best or fondest role?
BS: HAUNTING FEAR is probably my favorite film…I played "Vicki", a tormented housewife who slowly goes insane and murders her cheating husband and his lover. I liked it so much that I wrote an unofficial sequel myself, called BURIED NIGHTMARES. (It opens with an amnesiatic "Vicki" in a mental ward…and danger ensues from there!) I recently sold that script, and I’m also an associate producer on it; we’ll be shooting it this summer.
DG: Can you tell us about any of your current projects?
BS: Oh my, what a busy year 2000 has been so far! I’ve already shot three movies: REAL TIME (in Iowa), playing a pregnant cop caught in a hostage crisis; THE REAPER (in San Francisco), playing the first victim of a masked psycho slasher while on a camping trip in the woods; and SIDESHOW, as a gypsy fortune teller at a very dark carnival.
I’m also featured in three magazines this month (March): "Autograph Times", "Alternative Cinema", and "Vampirotica". I have a new "Femme Fatales" article and photos coming out in June, too.
DG: Any upcoming shows and conventions where your fans can catch you?
BS: Apr 1-2 Fright Vision Akron, OH, Apr 14-16 Chiller Theater Secaucus, NJ, Apr 20-23 Imagine Con Virginia Beach, VA, May 27-28 TachyCon Orlando, FL, Jun 29-Jul 2 Dragon Con Atlanta, GA, July 20-23 Comic Con San Diego, CA, Sep 29 – Oct 1 Reznhedz Chicago, Il, Oct 27-29 Chiller Theater Secaucus, NJ!
