SYRACUSE, NY, AUGUST 31, 1999 -- "Razor Blade Smile," a stylish horror/comedy from Great Britain focusing on a sexy 150-year-old vampire employed as a hitwoman-for-hire, won top honors at the first annual B-Movie Film Festival, held in Phoenix, NY.
"Razor Blade Smile" captured the top prize, the Best B-Movie Award, along with kudos for director Jake West, actress Eileen Daly and for cinematography and special effects. "Razor Blade Smile" was one of 100 films in competition at the B-Movie Film Festival, which celebrated the unique art of the lower-budget motion picture genre.
Scott McCord was named Best Actor at the festival for his performance in the drama "Motel." Supporting acting awards went to Robert Margolis for the law-bending feature "Criminals" and Verda Bridges for the race-relations satire "Color Blinded." The action/comedy "Bottom Feeders" earned the Best Screenplay Award for Thomas Baumann.
"Plenilunio," a horror film from Brazil, was named Best Foreign Film. "Some Nudity Required," an in-depth study on the B-Movie orbit, won Best Documentary honors. "Flowers on a MuuMuu" received the Best Short Subject Award, while the time-travel drama "The Drivetime" earned the award for Best Musical Score.
In the technical awards categories, the apocalyptic Macedonian fantasy "Goodbye 20th Century!" earned Best Set Design and Best Editing honors, and "The Good Book" snagged Best Make-Up Effects.
For two categories unique to this festival, Michael Legge's performance as the Amazing Jacques in the comedy "Braindrainer" won Best Villain, while Joey Buttafuoco earned the Best Celebrity Cameo title for his brief appearance as a Mafia lieutenant in "The Underground Comedy Movie."
